During my mom's stay in Suzhou we took her to the Panmen historical scenic spot. One of the first sites seen as you approach the Panmen scenic site is the Ruiguang Pagoda. This pagoda was built in 1004 AD. It is about 53 meters tall and has eight sides. It is made of brick and timber. This pagoda is the earliest Buddha pagoda in Suzhou.
The pagoda is divided into three sections. The sections are the base, the body, and the cupola. The above pictures show the cupola and the base.
The next important site to see at the Panmen Scenic Site is the old city wall. The city wall would surround the city and be used as a barrier to protect the city from invasion. It had a water entry and a land entry. From the inside of the gate, there is a gradient to climb up to the top of the old city wall. This gradient was used to allow men on horses to get on top of the wall and quickly move from one side of the city to the other.
Once up onto the city wall, there is a platform where you can see the land gate and the water gate. The land gate and the water gate lie side by side and are fitted with stone portcullis to prevent enemy forces from entering the city. It is said that the water gate can also be used for water level control.
The last site to see at the scenic area is the highest single arc stone bridge in Suzhou. The stone bridge was built in 1084 AD. The bridge runs across the ancient canal. You will have to come see it yourself. No picture available.
